Just like the rest of the world, jobs in the manufacturing sector are perceived as monotonous and labor-intensive. This is exacerbated by the region’s limited awareness of the technological advancements in the industry, making manufacturing roles seem less appealing when compared to white-collar positions.
Most people in the region pursue farming, which is one of the most predominant sectors. Due to their familiarity and comfort with this industry, many are hesitant to explore alternate career paths in sectors like manufacturing.
The region’s somewhat isolated location has inhibited its exposure to quality education, limiting opportunities for skill development and professional growth. Because of this, many young people are compelled to leave their homes in pursuit of education and employment elsewhere.
To address the challenges faced by Uttarakhand’s manufacturing industry, Phillips Education was awarded the state’s Center of Excellence in Manufacturing Technology. A project funded by the World Bank, the CoE involves close collaboration between Phillips Education and the Uttarakhand Government’s Kaushal Vikas Vibhag, or Skill Development Department. This enables alignment between the private and public sector, ensuring the CoE can address the region’s unique challenges and needs while also furthering the mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Skill India.
